Lawmakers charge constituents on collection of PVCs

The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on Lagosians to take advantage of the three-day distribution of Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) to make change possible by ensuring they collect their PVCs to be able to vote in 2015 general election.

The call was made just as INEC declared November 7 to 9 as days set aside to distribute permanent voter’s card to those who have previously registered during the last registration exercise.

In a statement by the spokesperson of the House, Segun Olulade, the lawmakers noted that registration and collection of voter’s card are the power to make change possible as only those who are able to register would vote during elections.

The House also explained that every Lagosian should rise up and register in the grace period to be declared by INEC so those who missed the exercise previously or have reached the age of 18 by now can register.

“Inasmuch as everyone desires change, change does not come without power to vote in the democratic system. We must all register and ensure we collect our permanent voter’s cards as the only power to drive away corruption, poverty, unemployment, insecurity and many vices plaguing our society today,” the statement read in part.

While commending Governor Babatunde Fashola for declaring today as work-free day to enable Lagosians participate extensively in the exercise, the House alleged that “there is grand plan by the PDP to seize Lagos by every means, and the plan is being orchestrated from the Federal Government.”

“Therefore, all Lagosians must be at alert and monitor the registration exercise in their respective neighbourhood so that the rights to make decision at the poll can be protected without infringements.”

The lawmakers also punctured the decline in the number of registered voters announced by INEC as a result of about 1.4 million potential voters missing on the INEC register for Lagos.

They argued that with the current level of awareness in the state, Lagos registered voters cannot be declining.
“Voter’s registrations have always been on the geometric increase from time to time being a very versatile and progressive state.

“The power to make change is in our own hands. We must deploy our strengths to ensure change is seen in our lifetime so that our unborn children are not subjected to severe hardship that the present generation is going through,” the statement added.
