Nigeria will collapse due to corruption, says Agabi

If urgent steps are not taken to address the chronic problems of greed and corruption among the elites in the country, Nigeria will, in the next few years, cease to exist as a nation.

The former Minister of Justice, Kanu Agabi, disclosed this while delivering a lecture at the first Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) Chairman’s Recognition and Awards Ceremony in Abuja on Monday.

This is as the Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Lamorde, disclosed that his commission had dismissed and is also prosecuting some of its staff for unethical and unprofessional conducts while others are facing various milder forms of disciplinary measures.

According to Agabi, “If as a nation and a people, we do not set to work immediately to repair the years of damage to our country and if we do not unite and make the sacrifices that need to be made, above all, if we do not give up our greed and corruption, it will not be long before we cease to exist as a nation.

“Sometimes you hear the expression of doubt as to whether the Yoruba, Hausa and the Igbos are going to divide the nation. If our nation collapses, it will be because of corruption. We must give up corruption.”

He attributed the increase in corruption in the country to duplication of offices and the employment of incompetent people in all the states of the federation.

“The problems of this country arose from the multiplication of offices and the appointment of unqualified people.

“From 12 states to 19 states and then to 36 states.  We have 774 local government councils in the country. Most of those that are manning them are not qualified. That is where the problem is coming. Every time we multiply institutions.”

While urging the EFCC staff that got various awards to keep on the good works, Agabi said: “The impact of your work cannot be quantified. You prevented the resources of the nation from being stolen; you recovered those that have been stolen and you discouraged those who may be minded to pilfer our resources.”
