Fayose decries poor power supply to Ekiti

Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose has accused Benin Electricity Distribution Company and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) of deliberately shortchanging the state in the supply and distribution of electricity.
Fayose who paid an impromptu  visit to the headquarters of Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in Abuja decried the poor power situation in his state.

He stressed that angry residents recently took to the streets to protest the neglect by Benin Disco and demanded that NERC takes action against the firm.

But an official of Benin Disco in response to the governor’s demand said the firm was not aware of any protest by Ekiti residents.

He ,however, noted that the firm was aware of the poor power supply to Ekiti and Ondo states and was working hard to fix the problem.

Not satisfied with the response, Fayose turned on him and said: “I was there when they called Benin (Disco) because it was a bad situation and your people were beaten up at some point and your office vandalised.
“And they (angry mob) were moving from one community to the other if not for my intervention. So if you have not been briefed then it is unfortunate. It is very unfortunate because they shut down the whole state for more than half a day.”

The governor expressed worry that over a year after the sector handed over to private owner, poor supply remained very poor.

He stressed that without improved supply of electricity “the essence of the privatisation will be defeated”.
